Like many of you, Patmos holds a coveted place in my heart. The combination of extraordinary beauty coupled with unmeasurable spirit can only be found on that island. I consider myself fortunate to be able to visit Patmos yearly. It is a spiritual home for many of us. But it seems something amiss is afoot that will alter Patmos’ character significantly. I have caught winds of discussions, in Greek, on certain Facebook pages.

What might appear as a symbol of economic opportunity risks becoming a source of long-term ecological and cultural harm. Here’s how it works: to reduce sulfur emissions from their fuel, ships use massive scrubbers — systems that spray seawater into their exhaust funnels to capture toxic pollutants. But that contaminated water, instead of being safely stored or treated, is often dumped directly back into the sea.

The modern demands of short-term tourism—concentrated into a frantic eight-week summer window—strain not only the people but the very land itself. It is time for Patmos to return to its essence. To listen to its natural rhythms. To become a beacon of something far more enduring: sustainability, regeneration, and harmony with nature.
Biotourism focuses specifically on biodiversity—observing and protecting plants, animals, and ecosystems, often with an educational or scientific emphasis. Ecotourism, while closely related, has a broader scope: it promotes sustainable travel to natural areas, supports local communities, and encourages environmental conservation. While all biotourism is a form of ecotourism, not all ecotourism is centered on biodiversity. Biotourism is more about life systems; ecotourism includes cultural, community, and environmental aspects as well.

It was here that John the Theologian received the Revelation, and for centuries since, pilgrims have come seeking silence, wisdom, and renewal. The cave, the monastery, the winding paths between hills and bays—these are not just physical landmarks but sacred touchstones of memory and meaning. Patmos is not just an island; it is a living sanctuary. And yet, this sanctuary stands on the brink of desecration.
